PLUS ME is honoring Black student stories with a new program: The Griot Circle.

“Griot” is a West African term for a storyteller, historian, and/or an experienced orator. Traditionally, Griots keep and pass down the history of a community as a way of celebrating and preserving their heritage. Storytelling is the vehicle Griots use to keep the memory and spirit of their community alive.

PLUS ME is excited to pay homage to this tradition by providing a free virtual 5-week summer storytelling program for Black high school students in SoCal. It will be a great opportunity to continue to honor and champion Black stories while practicing your writing and interpersonal communication skills with the help of a free PLUS ME journal. With the help of 5 Black changemakers who will serve as guest speakers, you will be empowered and find support as you celebrate your story. You will meet virtually every Friday with other students to share your stories and reveal insights from the weekly assignments. Upon program completion, you will receive a certificate of accomplishment.

How It Works

Register for our program below.

If accepted into our program, you will receive a free My Story Matters Journal in the mail. Every Monday and Wednesday, our team will send you an email with short activities to complete in your journal that will help you find your voice and activate your story. On Fridays, we will meet virtually as a community at 1 PM to share our stories and hear from special guest change makers on how we can take action in our communities.
