Pandemic Perspectives Book Launch

In 2020, CSUSB GEAR UP Director Summer Steele had a wonderful idea: to create an avenue of expression for the community to share their personal perspectives of the pandemic in a published book. PLUS ME and GEAR UP came together to embark on this endeavor, and on February 24th, 2022, the journey culminated in the celebratory Pandemic Perspectives Book Launch.

Pandemic Perspectives is a collection of personal stories on our shared struggle written by GEAR UP students and educators. During the book launch celebration, a panel of published authors from Pandemic Perspectives read their powerful stories live for a virtual audience.

The panel consisted of GEAR UP educators Dr. Monique Ohashi and Antonio Guereca, and GEAR UP student Giselle Pena Velasco. Their stories highlighted experiences that rang true for all of us - stories on loss, resilience, and hope.

After sharing their stories, the audience had the opportunity to connect with the speakers during a Q&A. Each author reflected on the time that has passed since writing their stories, as well as the cathartic experience of sharing their stories live with their community. As the conversation deepened, members of the audience also shared their perspectives, and what transpired was an evening of healing and community.

Pandemic Perspectives is a beautiful reminder of the power that stories hold - that we are not alone, that our voices matter, and when we share our stories, we can make a difference in other people’s lives.
